A secluded north-west coast location allows The Oberoi to offers its guests complete seclusion. Lombok isn’t exactly overcrowded with holiday-makers, but this part of the island is particularly tranquil.

An open-sided pavilion in a coconut grove garden houses the Lumbung Restaurant, serving up fine Indonesian, Asian and continental cuisine alongside incredible views. The relaxed Sunbird Café is ideal for a beach breakfast or light lunch. Gentle Trek to Sendang Gile and Tiu Kelep Waterfalls Charges apply

Adults and children can enjoy a gentle riverside trek to two beautiful waterfalls in the Rinjani National Park. The mellow adventure, in the company of a guide, begins with a descent down a well-trodden flight of steps. Within minutes, guests will catch their first glimpse of the 40-metre, tiered waterfall and natural spring known as SendangGile. The trek then continues upstream along the banks of the river to the breathtaking Tiu Kelep Waterfall.

Snorkelling on Gili Islands Reef Charges apply

Daytrips include snorkelling excursions to the nearby Gili Islands, where there are some particularly beautiful reefs teeming with underwater creatures and phosphorous coral. Accompanied by a member of ‘The Oberoi Beach Club’ team, adults and children will have the opportunity to snorkel the reef and observe its gentle, nimble residents. The Gilis are famous for turtles, and the snorkelling guide knows exactly where to find them. Guests are almost guaranteed to see a Hawksbill turtle feeding on sponges and hydroids in the coral garden. The Hawksbill is listed as an endangered species and it is a real privilege to get close to one of these graceful creatures in its natural habitat.

Tanjung Market by Pony & Cart Complimentary

Accompanied by a guide from the hotel, adults and kids can travel by a ‘cidomo’ horse-drawn cart to experience the sights and sounds of Tanjung’s busy market, which sells everything that is grown or produced on the island. Here, coffee beans, fruits, vegetables, meat, smoked fish on sticks, blocks of locally harvested tobacco, peanuts and cashews are all available somewhere amid the rich aromas, ripe smells and chaos of the heaped stalls. Additionally, guests can bargain for textiles, baskets, and bamboo crafts.

Making Balinese Offerings Charges apply

About 10 percent of Lombok’s population claims Balinese lineage, especially in the west of the island. One of the religious traditions of these Balinese Hindus is to give offerings to the gods. The woven offering trays are created from coconut leaves. Guests will be taught the technique, which involves stripping off of the central spine of the coconut frond, cutting, skewering and weaving. There are many different models ranging from very simple to remarkably complex and ornate.

Preserving The Coral Reefs and Turtle Release Complimentary

Guests can positively contribute to a sustainable eco-project by ‘adopting’ a piece of coral as part of a joint effort to build and restore the coral reefs in front of the resort. As a special treat, guests who are lucky enough to be staying at The Oberoi, Lombok at the right time can participate in the hotel’s turtle release programme.

Sasak Pottery Classes Charges apply

Using local greyish-brown clay and simple 'stone and paddle' tools, the women of Lombok have been producing the pit-fired earthenware pottery known as 'TembikarSasak' since the early 16th century. The resulting pots are a beautifully rich, terracotta red colour. Guests will have the opportunity to learn the techniques and work the clay with their own hands to make a pot to take back home.

Sasak Weaving Charges apply

Lombok is well known for its hand woven textiles, which are produced using traditional back strap looms. In the Sasak weaving classes, guests can learn the technique and create their own table runner, which they can then take home as a very special memento of their visit to the island.

Weekly Yoga Complimentary

Early morning yoga sessions take place beside the Tokek Bar terrace, surrounded by the coconut palms and the magnificence of the Indian Ocean. A professional instructor will guide participants through the various postures, while also adapting the techniques to suit individual needs.
